Clocks. The hour hands that flew by so quickly are now more likely to be digital images glowing in the dark, flashing instead of ticking, but still measuring the seasons of our lives at a faster rate than we'd like. Buildings. Start with a solid foundation; add brick, mortar, wood and stone to shield the interior from the elements. Insert a window here and there to allow light and warmth to enter. Plumbing and electricity, gas lines and air vents start the circulation. Top it with a chimney to channel out the combustible debris. Splashes of paint, stucco, varnish and shingle decorate and invite. People. And aren't we the pattern that the blueprints have been drawn from to design these buildings? Generations can be measured through the style and form of buildings. And just like people, there is a time to stand, and a time to fall. |
A Time to Stand and a Time to Fall |

When you first open the door, you are immediately standing directly in front of a press, which seems to be larger than the building that houses it! The air is perfumed with the essence of ink, and every inch of space has been utilized for one printing process or another. The friendly husband and wife team of James and Norma Phillips owns this print shop, which has its roots in our neighborhood. Clarence "Rob Roy" Phillips (James's father) was the original printer in the building he rented along with a restaurant on Dueber Ave., across from the old Victor Building in 1921. The business was moved north in 1966, when the current building was purchased. While Rob Roy worked with hot metal, today the Phillips' continue his profession with the latest in computer technology. Generations to come will enjoy the efforts Rob Roy began, because it truly is a family business. James Jr. does the pre-press work, while his brother Sam is a pressman. James and Norma have two daughters, Vicki Gonzales, who does freelance design; and Edie Seaman, whose career is interior design.
